Of Pallas Athena, glorious goddess, first we sing,
The steely-eyed resourceful one with unflagging spirit,
The venerated virgin, the sacker of cities, the queen of plunder, the wisest of war gods, the patron of heroes, the fire of the bold,
The goddess of greatness and glory,
She who grants perfection in the moment of truth, she who demands the wisdom of courage and battle prowess,
Tritogeneia, to whom wise Zeus himself gave birth from his august head,
In battle armor of shining gold:
All the immortals watched in awe as before Zeus,
The goat rider, she sprang quickly down from his immortal head with a brandish of her sharp spear,
The mighty Pallas.
A fearsome tremor went through great Olympus,
From the power of the steely-eyed one,
The earth resounded terribly all around,
And the sea heaved in a confusion of swirling waves.
But suddenly the main was held in check,
And Hyperion’s splendid son halted his swift-footed steeds for a long time,
Until the maiden Pallas Athena, removed the godlike armor from her immortal shoulders,
And wise Zeus rejoiced.
And we rejoice and salute you, Pallas Athena, daughter of Zeus, as we take heed of forever becoming worthy of your attention and affection.
